MEET JOHN
For over 32 years, John dedicated his life to helping others.
As a Probation Officer and NYS Parole professional, John spent his entire career guiding others toward a path of healing and hope. But when the time came for him to face his personal struggles… John couldn’t take his own advice.
“After years of encouraging others to seek help, I found myself in the peculiar position of needing the same. I resisted advice from all quarters because that ‘kind of thing’ wasn’t for me.”
John’s story is more common than people realize. In the United States, over 20% of the population has reported feeling depressed, with 7% reporting symptoms of PTSD and another 33% reporting symptoms of chronic stress.
While these statistics paint a picture of a population in dire need of mental health support, they don’t tell us the whole story. Veterans and first responders experience these symptoms at alarmingly high levels when compared to the general population:
Of the 20% of people reporting symptoms of depression, 25% were veterans and 50% were first responders.
Of the 7% reporting PTSD, 26% were veterans and 38% were first responders.
Of the 35% of people reporting chronic stress, 80% were first responders.
Guardians face higher levels of burnout, suicidal ideation, and unmet mental health needs than the general public, and the fear of stigma often keeps them from getting the care they need.
The guardians we serve — military, veterans, and first responders — are trained to put everyone else first, but when it comes to addressing their own needs, asking for help can feel impossible.
Your gift today gives life to our mission.
